Atletico Madrid face a scenario where they have to sell Saúl Ãiguez if they want to sign a striker this summer.
Diego Simeone Reportedly keen to add a leader to his squad following the return of loan striker Moussa Dembélé to Lyon and Luis Suarez not getting any younger.
As we have seen with Barcelona, clubs exceeding their salary cap in La Liga can only invest 25% of all income and they cannot register new players unless enough money is first brought in.
The cap is set differently for each club based on income, and the majority of clubs have seen their cap reduced this season due to declining revenues due to the pandemic.
And in the case of Atléti, they’re now close to their salary cap limit, meaning they can’t sign a new striker until there’s a meaningful departure.
Saúl is expected to be the man who makes his place, the Spain international with a long-term contract that makes him one of the best earners at Wanda Metropolitano.
The midfielder has been linked with a swap deal with Antoine Griezmann, but Atleti is unlikely to match the Frenchman’s huge salary.
Saúl is also attracting interest from Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, and it seems a move for the midfielder is not only preferred but necessary for Atleti as they look to add that much needed depth on the front row ahead of their La Liga title defense.
