The Macro Covid epidemic in Mallorca leaves 2,000 students in quarantine in Madrid.
The Community of Madrid has so far registered 320 covid infections and has more than 2,000 students, who traveled to Mallorca after their exams, in quarantine. The trip sparked a “macro-epidemic” that has so far reached at least six Autonomous Communities.
Madrid’s health authorities explained on Friday June 25 that 31 educational establishments are affected in the region. The organization of the trips depended on the students themselves, who stayed in eight hotels and participated in a “program of fairly intense activities and festivals,” said a spokesperson.
The pandemic appeared to be in remission in Madrid, where 318 people are hospitalized in wards and 174 are admitted to intensive care.
However, the Department of Health remains concerned about the increase in the Delta or Indian strain, which could be of concern in the coming weeks.
Airport checks carried out “only to 5 to 7% of travelers”, 25 positive cases by Covid last week and 94 in the month. This is equivalent, explains the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Antonio Zapatero, “to a weekly epidemic in Madrid – but only at the airport”.
Health Minister Enrique Ruiz Escudero today sent a letter to Minister Carolina Darias warning him of these data and requesting an urgent meeting regarding the controls in place at Barajas airport.
